Is This a Dental Emergency?

Some dental problems can wait for a routine appointment. Others become harder to treat with every hour that passes. Contact us right away if you are experiencing:

•  Severe or Worsening Pain - Pain that keeps you awake or does not respond to over-the-counter medication often signals infection or nerve involvement.

•  A Knocked-Out or Displaced Tooth - The window for saving a displaced permanent tooth is measured in hours, not days.

•  Facial or Jaw Injury - Any blow to the face causing swelling, numbness, or a change in how your teeth fit together needs evaluation.

•  Swelling With Fever - Facial swelling combined with fever suggests a spreading infection that requires prompt treatment.

•  Bleeding That Will Not Stop - Bleeding continuing more than 20 to 30 minutes after firm pressure needs attention.

•  A Tooth Fractured Below the Gumline - These cannot be repaired with a routine filling and usually require surgical extraction.

•  Wisdom Tooth Pain With Swelling - Infection around a partially erupted wisdom tooth can escalate quickly.

If you are not certain whether your situation qualifies, call us. Our team screens urgent calls and will tell you honestly whether you need to be seen today.

When to Go to the Emergency Room Instead

There are situations where a hospital emergency department, not a dental office, is the right first stop. Go directly to the ER or call 911 if you have:

•  Difficulty breathing or swallowing

•  Swelling that is closing the throat or spreading toward the eye

•  Loss of consciousness following a head or facial injury

•  Heavy bleeding that cannot be controlled

•  A suspected fracture involving the skull, eye socket, or neck

Hospitals are equipped to stabilize airway and neurological emergencies. Once you are stable, we can take over the dental and facial reconstruction side of your care.

Emergency Procedures We Perform

Our Austin surgeons manage the full range of urgent oral and maxillofacial problems, including:

•  Urgent Tooth Extractions - Removing teeth that are fractured, badly decayed, or the source of infection.

•  Treatment of Abscesses and Infections - Draining infection and beginning treatment before it spreads into deeper tissue.

•  Facial Trauma Repair - Managing soft tissue lacerations and injuries to the facial bones.

•  Jaw Fracture Repair - Stabilizing and reconstructing fractures of the upper or lower jaw caused by accident or injury.

•  Management of Displaced Teeth - Repositioning and stabilizing teeth moved by trauma.

•  Emergency Dental Implant Replacement - Addressing a failed or damaged implant promptly.

•  Post-Surgical Complications - Treating dry socket, persistent bleeding, or other issues following a prior procedure.

Once the urgent problem is resolved, we build a plan for whatever restoration is needed, including dental implants where a tooth cannot be saved.

What Happens When You Call

Emergency visits move faster than routine appointments, and knowing the sequence helps:

1.  We ask a short set of questions by phone to gauge urgency and rule out anything that belongs in an emergency room.

2.  You are given the earliest available time, with same-day appointments prioritized for true emergencies.

3.  On arrival, we take digital imaging and examine the area to identify exactly what is happening.

4.  We address your pain and stabilize the immediate problem, using the level of anesthesia appropriate to the treatment.

5.  You leave with written aftercare instructions and a scheduled follow-up.

Why Austin Patients Come to Us in an Emergency

Urgent care is where surgical training matters most.

•  Dual Medical and Dental Training - Our surgeons hold both medical and dental degrees, which matters when an injury involves more than the teeth.

•  Trauma Experience - Facial injuries are a core part of oral and maxillofacial practice, not an occasional case.

•  On-Site 3D Imaging - Three-dimensional imaging in our office means no referral out for a scan before treatment can begin.

•  Full Restorative Capability - From the emergency visit through final implant restoration, your care stays in one place.

•  Southwest Austin Location - Convenient access from Oak Hill, Sunset Valley, Circle C, and the surrounding communities.

FAQs

What counts as an emergency an oral surgeon should handle?

Facial trauma, jaw fractures, teeth broken below the gumline, spreading infections and abscesses, and bleeding that will not stop are all situations that generally require an oral and maxillofacial surgeon rather than a general dentist.

Should I go to the emergency room or call an oral surgeon?

Go to the emergency room for anything affecting your breathing, swallowing, or consciousness, for uncontrolled bleeding, or for swelling spreading toward the throat or eye. For urgent dental problems that are not life-threatening, calling an oral surgeon directly is usually faster and gets you to the right specialist sooner.

What should I do if a tooth is knocked out?

Pick the tooth up by the crown, never the root, and do not scrub it. If it is an adult tooth, rinse it briefly and try to place it back in the socket; if that is not possible, keep it in milk or the patient’s own saliva and get to us immediately. Do not attempt to reinsert a child’s baby tooth, as doing so can damage the permanent tooth developing underneath. Time matters in every case.

Can an oral surgeon treat facial injuries from an accident?

Yes. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are specifically trained to treat facial trauma, including fractures of the jaw and facial bones, soft tissue lacerations, and injuries to the teeth caused by accidents.

Will I be seen the same day?

We reserve time in the schedule for urgent cases and prioritize true emergencies for same-day treatment. Call us as early in the day as you can and our team will tell you honestly what is available.
