Posted on 7/7/2020 by Office
You may be walking around with bumps in your mouth that need to be treated. Many people walk around with mouth bumps that never need treatment. However, sometimes bony mouth growths may need to be removed. If you have a bony bump in your mouth, you need to let us have a look at it. In some cases, bony bumps need to be removed for your dental health. Give us a minute to explain bony growths in your mouth and whether or not you need treatment.
What Are Bony Growths?
Bony growths in your mouth are called torus platinus if they appear on the palate, and torus mandibularis appear on the lower palate or lower jawbone. Torus appear as a bony bump in your mouth. They are made of calcium, so they are hard like bones are. Torus can be found in between 5% and 20% of the population. In most cases, Torus grow slowly, and do not need to be removed.
When Do Torus Need to be Treated?
If the Torus are not causing issues in your mouth, we usually leave them alone. However, there are times Torus have to be treated. There are times that Torus are interfering with you eating food during the day. Torus may also make it impossible for us to practice restorative dentistry in your mouth. We might have a hard time placing bridges, implants or dentures. When that happens, it is possible we may have to remove Torus in order to do work in your mouth. When we remove Torus, it is not painful, because Torus do not have nerves or blood vessels, but the area may be slow to heal. After removal, we are able to place appliances in your mouth to restore your smile. Do you have bumps in your mouth, why not give us a call?
