How to Get Ready for Oral Surgery

Posted on 3/15/2020 by Office
How to Get Ready for Oral SurgeryPeople can have oral surgery due to many different complications. On a basic level, oral surgery is any surgery dealing with the mouth or jaws. However, it can also be part of facial surgery as well. Though oral surgery may seem scary, there are a few things you can do to prepare for it.

Before your oral surgery, our clinic will give you some pre-surgery instructions. You may receive a very specialized set of instructions or a general set of instructions depending on your particular procedure. In most cases, we ask our patients to come in with freshly brushed and flossed teeth. This will help prevent infection after surgery.

Other Tips for Preparation

After your surgery, you may experience a moderate amount of pain. We recommend that you try to get your prescribed medications before your surgery. This will ensure that you, or the person driving you, will not be stuck in line at the drug store. The last thing you want is for your anesthesia to wear off before you're able to properly medicate yourself.

Another tip we like to tell our patients is to prepare food ahead of time. The pain from oral surgery can make it difficult to eat. Plus, in most circumstances, we advise patients to stay away from solid foods for a few days in order to recover properly. Make sure that you have enough water as well.

While coming into our office for oral surgery may seem daunting, you can have a stress-free experience with the proper preparation. Proper preparation will ensure that your mouth heals properly so that you can get back to your normal routine. If you have any more question about how to prepare for oral surgery, please call our office and we would be happy to help.
